Controversy Erupts Over Merger of NMA and NATHM

Nepal Mountain Academy (NMA) and Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM) have faced criticism for their proposed merger in the field of mountain tourism. Lakpa Phuti Sherpa, the former president of NMA, expressed concerns during a press conference Yesterday, highlighting the importance of maintaining distinct entities for mountaineering and adventure tourism.

When the institute was established, efforts were made to seek collaboration with foreign universities, but Lakpa Phuti Sherpa emphasized the significance of retaining connections with Nepali institutions, particularly Tribhuvan University. She stated, "We have severed ties with various foreign connections and have embraced collaboration with Tribhuvan University. Today, we see the results of this decision."

Lakpa Phuti Sherpa further mentioned that NMA has been successfully conducting various essential programs for mountain tourism, including technical training, trekking guide training, and aspirant mountain guide training. She expressed concern that the merger process has undermined the institution's goals and objectives, causing damage to its reputation.

Sanjay Khatiwada, the Goodwill Ambassador of the Academy, emphasized the need for specialized organizations within the tourism sector. He suggested addressing internal weaknesses and improving the institution rather than merging with NATHM.

The government's intervention in the progress of the mountaineering institute and the obligation to collaborate with foreigners in the absence of recognition pose challenges, according to Lakpa Phuti Sherpa. She also highlighted the government's decision to halt foreign collaborations, making it mandatory to learn from foreigners, as an additional obstacle.

As per the Tourism Policy 2016, the government aims to establish an international academy for mountain tourism. The institute has been conducting educational programs in line with this policy, including Bachelor of Mountain Studies, technical and research-based programs, and Mountain and Mountaineering Science MSc in Mountain and Mountaineering Sciences in affiliation with Tribhuvan University.

The institution has gained recognition for its academic achievements and practical training, with students successfully climbing peaks like Merapi at 6,470 meters, Chulu Peak at 6,126 meters, and Labuche Peak at 6,119 meters. The institute holds the Guinness World Record for the largest number of students successfully ascending mountains, making it a proud achievement for the country.

Despite facing challenges, NMTI remains committed to its mission of providing quality education and training in mountain tourism. The institute's unique programs and achievements have positioned it as a symbol of pride in the global educational and research community.
